City of
Fort Myers, Florida
Fire Rescue

The City of Fort Myers Fire Department was founded in 1901. In the following nine decades of service, we have pioneered advances in the fire service in our region while keeping the level of service to our citizens as our first and foremost objective.

In 1963, the Department's staff converted from volunteer to paid status. In 1972 the City of Fort Myers was chosen to conduct a pilot program for the State Fire College. Since that time, we have become a Regional Training Center for the State of Florida Fire Marshal's Office.

The Fire Department is a full-service department, offering fire suppression, basic life support (BLS), public education, code enforcement, hazardous material response and mitigation, training, testing and water (fire boat) response. The Department, now known as Fire/Rescue, is also involved in summer youth programs that focus on at-risk youngsters.

As the Department prepares to enter the year 2000, we are excited about the programs that are on the table.

Committment to Public Education

We are very proud of our Public Education programs. We have a speakers' bureau on topics from fire safety to medical to disaster planning (hurricanes, etc).

The Department gave over 300 programs last year and we interacted with over 15,000 children. Our childrens' program includes videos, talks, demonstration of equipment and participation by the children in special exercises.

Skill & Dedication

Our hazardous material response team is the finest and best equipped in five counties. We provide out team to all of Lee County through an interlocal agreement or contract.

We also have a High-Angle/Confined-Space Rescue Team. This is the team of firefighters that topple down buildings, water towers, light poles, etc. They also rescue victims of trench collapse, cave in, building collapse, etc.
