SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

DESCRIPTION: The program is designed to prepare students for employment as surgical technicians, surgical technologists or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these occupations. Selected portions skills to enable nursing graduates to become employable in operating rooms as surgical nurses.

LENGTH: 1080 clock hours, 36 weeks. Class hours will vary during the clinical phase of training as well as on some class days. Classes start in January and students graduate in October.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Prospective students must complete all steps to the admission process before their names will be placed on the waiting list for this class. These steps are:1) score at the 11th grade level on the admission test; 2) receive and complete the application for health occupations; 3) supply 3 personal references (1 work) using the school reference form; 4) complete the metric and apothecary packets in the SAIL lab; and 5) have an official high school transcript or GED scores sent to the school. Due to new Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES: Approximately $100.00 for uniforms and supplies.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS: Teal scrub tops, white slacks or skirt, white duty shoes, (no clogs), white hose, 4 three-ring notebook and 1 pair wrap-around goggles.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK: Opportunities for employment in hospitals, out-patient surgical facilities, and doctors' offices in Southwest Florida are good.
