Welcome to our newly formed Academy of Religion and Philosophy at the Unitarian
Universalist Church of Fort Myers, FL. This educational endeavor seeks to provide an
opportunity for individuals to investigate and to discuss some of the most perplexing
issues confronting humankind. We believe that this endeavor will enable all of us --
from the youngest to the oldest -- to be prepared to face the challenges of a sometimes
confusing, sometimes hostile world.
Our educational programs are predicated on three fundamental principles. First, learning
is a lifelong enterprise. Thus, we have developed courses for adults as well as for
children, for people who are in the midst of a career as well as for those in retirement.
Second, our classes celebrate diversity. Our world is comprised of a "delightful variation"
of customs, languages, beliefs, and practices. We have designed courses that will remind
us of this diversity and its capacity to inform and enhance our lives.
Finally, the Academy is dedicated to the spiritual character and purpose of education.
it is important that we learn about the factual data, the technological intricacies and the
historical developments of our civilization. However, these are not enough. Education has a
far nobler goal -- to humanize us, to lift our spirits above the mud and clutter of the pond, and to
transform us into beauiful lotus flowers.
We believe that the Academy of Religion and Philosophy will prove to be a valuable
component of our church community. We hope that you will join us in this bold new venture.
