General Motors has
two billion lines of code to correct. Its y2k budget for this year and next year will be $300 to $500 million.
In 1997, GM spent $45 million.
The
California White Paper says that 40% of any repair project is testing. This is a low estimate. Others put it as high as
70%. So, if GM spent $45 million in 1997, and has budgeted the lion's share of its y2k repair funds for next year, what does this tell us about GM's time budget?

General Motors named Don Constantino, formerly a year 2000 program manager for GM's North American operations unit, to head the automaker's corporate year 2000 program. He succeeds Ray Khan, who left GM last fall to become CIO at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. GM recently disclosed that it spent $45 million on year 2000 efforts last year, and expects to spend between $300 million and $500 million this year and next.
