Who are they?
Gartner Group is a billion-dollar-a-year firm that specializes in computer-related topics. It is well respected among Fortune 1000 companies.
This is why Gartner's estimate is not easily dismissed by informed analysts, although the hatchet job reporter in FORBES did his best to smear Gartner by pointing out -- horror of horrors -- that Gartner sells y2k advisory services. (See the section on "Conflicts of Interest" in the

Gartner Group's reputation among Fortune 1000 companies as the leading independent information technology consultant and research firm makes it a prime source for Year 2000 answers and plenty of other tech advice. Think of the company, whose headquarters here house about a third of its 3,000 employees, as a Consumer Reports for the tech set.
''Gartner was saying that Year 2000 computer problems would have humongous impact well before anyone else,'' says Jack Cooper, chief information officer for drug giant Bristol Myers-Squibb. ''Knowing it came from them, I listened.''
With 11,086 clients paying $20,000 to $2.5 million a year, Gartner's revenue is expected to hit $1 billion by 2000, up from $511 million in 1997.
