COMPUTERWEEKLY NEWS (May 8, 1997) identifies these areas as being crucial. They all use embedded systems: programmed chips. "They keep nuclear cores stable, the oil, gas, water and electricuty flowing; they keep intensive care units operating and the forces armed and mobile. If they fail, our world implodes. And embedded systems are located everywhere."
The problem is, no one knows which ones are 2000-compliant. But one engineering firm has reported the following horrifying assessment: "There is some indication that we have a bigger problem in engineering systems than we do in general IT. The cost could be several times greater."
(The Gartner Group has estimated the repair cost of IT at $300 billion to $600 billion.)
