The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) is racing to become compliant. Officials promise that the systems will be ready for testing in December of 1998. This, of course, is the on-paper deadline for just about every organization outside of the U.S. Government, which has Nov. 1999 as its target date for several agencies.

"There are about 20,000 major IT systems in the MoD, including embedded systems, which affect our capability, of which about 4,000 are core systems," [Maj. Gen. Bill] Robins says. "About 40% are or could be non-compliant, and these are systems without which we can't operate, so it's a very real threat." . . .
But the real cause for concern is the non-compliant embedded systems, which control everything from central heating to intelligent bombs and missiles. "The embedded chip issue gives me a nightmare," Robins admits.
