AT&T is planning to get rid of the task of managing its legacy mainframe code in 200 supposedly "non-strategic" (and date-sensitive) areas such as billing and maintenance. It will make its decision in the summer of 1998.
This decision is part of an on-going plan by AT&T to get rid of its computing operations. In September, it sent 5,000 of its employees to its own outsourcing unit.
The y2k problem was not mentioned in the article, which appeared in INFORMATIONWEEK ONLINE (Oct. 9). But the word "legacy" always has y2k lurking close behind.
