So, you think COBOL is complex and Assembler nothing short of terrifying. Well, that's because you're not an unemployed teenager in Great Britain. There, the new Labor (sorry: Labour) government plans to launch what it calls a New Deal. The government plans to hire IBM and EDS (noncompliant) to train unemployed youths in the fine art of mainframe computer software code repair.
There are 260,000 unemployed youths in Britain. As many as 10,000 can be taught to do y2k repair work, estimates Andrew Smith, the employment minister.
