Harry Chapin was a popular singer and
songwriter (Cat's in the Cradle) during the 1970s. But he was more than an entertainer. He
was a leading advocate for the hungry and co-founded the World Hunger Year, an
international organization based in New York City, which seeks solutions to hunger
problems.
For years, Harry dedicated proceeds from every other concert he gave to
benefit his end-hunger cause. He was even posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal
for his outstanding humanitarian efforts. A portion of that award was modified to become
the logo for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
Tragically, Harry Chapin died in a car accident in 1981
at the age of 38.
The success of the Food Bank is based on Harry's
remarkable compassion and relentless determination to eliminate hunger. The Chapin family
are frequents visitors and continue to pledge their support for the programs and services
of the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida.
Visit some of these sites dedicated to
the memory and legacy of Harry. Many people have stories about Harry. This area of the
food bank site will have music, pictures, and other goodies.
