DIGITAL CAMERA:     The digital camera used is a Kodac DC40 with 754 X  520 resolution and holds 48 pictures at the highest quality setting.  It is a point and shoot type camera with very little setting that need to be worked with.  Even the focus is fixed.  The pictures are uploaded to the laptop via a cable to the serial port.  I have a standard AC/DC adaptor to use when uploading the pictures to preserve the battery life.  It uses 4 "AA" batteries.  I have brought a box of 40 Toshiba alkaline batteries that were just under $10 at Sam's Club.  The pictures are then coverted to jpg files and posted on the web site.  The small thumbnail pictures are 1" wide at 75dpi resolution.   They end up being about 5 to 10K.  The full size files are around 100K.   The size of the pictures and the resolution have a large determination of how big the file ends of being.  All this digital material is sent via a Australia ISP account to my ISP in Fort Myers Florida (www.cyberstreet.com).

AIRLINES: Delta is our airline in the States and we are flying Air New Zealand from LA to Sydney.  We have Quantas boomerange coupons for flights within Austrialia.   The one way segments are between $160 and $200 each. We are doing some train trave also. The first leg is on the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs. The laptop is a Gateway 2000 P133 with a 2GB hard drive.  I use Microsoft Office 97, Corel Draw, Corel Paint and Microsoft FrontPage 98.  I use Microsoft Exporer to test the web site.

GPS:  We have a Garmin 45 GPS (Global Positioning System (GPS),  handheld unit. This also uses "AA" batteries.

LAPTOP: The laptop is a Gateway 2000 P133 with a 2GB hard drive.  I use Microsoft Office 97, Corel Draw, Corel Paint and Microsoft FrontPage 98.  I use Microsoft Exporer to test the web site.

FIELD GEAR: I am using a LLBean full size backpack which was about $160. I also have one of their "campus" day packs that are specificaly made to carry a laptop and cost about $50..  I purchased a new pair of Gortex hiking boots from LL Bean for about $150.  I wore them to work for about the last three weeks before I left to break them in.  I have a light weight  "parka type" rain-suite that came from Sam's. Click here for a more complete list of items that I am carrying.

OTHER MEDIA CAPTURE: Andrew has a Sony Hi-8 video on cameras that we will be recording with.  We're a little low budget to have the resourses to put any of that on the web.  Home movies anyone?

Our media-capture tools provide us with digital files for our data, which we process on our computer in the field. We use Microsoft Word 97 along with FrontPage 98 for all text applications, and process our digital images as jpg files using Corel Paint 7.  All data files are then sent to the web site in Florida via an FTP program (FTP Exporer) using an internal PCMCIA card modem.

SUPPLY LIST: Could your backpack hold all this? Supplies
