Waltzing Matilda is an Australian folklore song. It is the song you hear on the home page. Some say it is a song about sheep stealing, others say the tale runs deeper than that. We intend to learn the lyrics and sing it on trains to see if the Australian people really do know the words. DIDGERIDOO:: What is a didgeridoo? The didgeridoo is the traditional and most characteristic instrument of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. Used for over 40,000 years, the didgeridoo ranks among the Earth's most primitive yet enduring instruments. It is made from bamboo or branches of specific trees that have had their cores eaten by white ants and termites. This creates cavernous, maze-like chambers that, when blown through properly (along with a technique called circular breathing that allows you to continue to play as you inhale), emanate thick drones that evoke not only meditation and primal accord, but the ancient mysteries of the Dreamtime. Other names and spellings for the didgeridoo are: Yidaki, Kanbi, Ihambilbilg, and Didjeridu. To the Aboriginees, the didgeridoo has been used as a tool to access various states of being and spirituality in ceremonies called "corroborees." There are several different types of ceremonies which require different types of didgeridoos. For example, during a ceremony where a young male is going through initiation, a very low-pitched, mesmerizing didgeridoo is played, evoking a trance-like state. For times of fun and celebration, one of the tribal elders will play a higher-pitched didgeridoo, which can be played quickly, that better accompanies the festive dancing.
