"Kowiachobee"

      Panther

Kowiachobee was the first panther in the world that is the product of artificial insemination. In 1991 the government came to Octagon to do a study on the artificially inseminated panthers. They wanted to see if a panther could be artificially inseminated.

In February 1991, Kowiachobee was born at Octagon. His mother was Twyla and his father was Charlie II. Octagon has some 40 odd panthers at the Sanctuary. We were the only facility that had this amount in one place. They needed 10 females and 10 males for their study. Kowiachobee had his first offspring born in February 1996  , a beutiful baby boy.

Panthers are also called cougars, mountain lions, pumas and catamont. They are 1/2 lb. at birth, and can have 1-4 in a litter. They are mature at 2-3 years of age. They can range from 60 lbs. to 130 lbs. for females -- the males range 100 lbs. up to 225 lbs. They are native to North and South America.
