The Housing Authority of Fort Myers (FMHA) owns and manages three elderly developments: Flossie M. Riley Garden Apartments, Bonair Towers, and Royal Palm Towers; four family developments: Palmetto Court, Michigan Court, Southward Village, and Sabal Palms; and three market rate developments: Jackson Plaza, Hibiscus Apartments and Meadowview Apartments. These developments provide housing for approximately 3,000 residents.
FMHA is dedicated to the ongoing task of providing clean and safe housing. While FMHA is consistently improving and renovating their existing developments, they are also concerned with developing opportunities for residents to eventually participate in the American Dream by becoming home owners. In the last three years, tremendous changes have occurred in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), necessitating substantial adjustments in local housing authorities. One of the most important changes has been the reduction and limitation of federal operating subsidies needed to provide low-income housing. As part of the transition toward the federally mandated welfare reform, housing authorities throughout the U.S. have been urged by HUD to balance their assets and acquire non-federal subsidies. The FMHA has been doing just that over the last five years. The key to empowering residents to move upward is to give them the opportunity for advancement. By having access to market value rentals and then single family homes, residents through credit rebuilding, home ownership classes, and consistent employment can reach their goal. The properties acquired to date are the above mentioned market rate developments; Jackson Plaza, Hibiscus Apartments and Meadowview Apartments. In addition, FMHA has also acquired a 100-acre parcel. Thanks to the tremendous generosity from a leading local citizen, the Housing Authority was the recipient of 100 underdeveloped acres in the City of Fort Myers. The ultimate use of this property will be to provide a residential enclave consisting of mixed - use development providing affordable housing for individuals of all ages.
